The Fo Tan industrial area houses a rising number of artists’ studios and the forthcoming open studio weekends beginning on 10 January are an excellent opportunity to glimpse the work of young and up-and-coming artists.
During these open days, Blue Lotus Gallery, Fo Tan’s only dedicated gallery, will present “Lala-land” featuring the work of Cornelia Erdmann, Lee Kit and Tsang Chui-mei who each offer their own artistic oasis as a place of quiet reflection; a counter to Hong Kong’s harried pace.
Erdmann has produced a fantasy garden of simple modernist tree branches and manufactured stainless steel butterflies, dragonflies and beetles. Her wall installation, ‘In Clover’, uses the steel and its reflected light to smartly give depth and an otherworldly air of possibilities.
Likewise, Tsang’s paintings reflect on the tight studio environment of spotlights and utilitarian furniture in which she works alongside an arcadian world featuring insects, fruit, tangled creepers, flowers and foliage using a technique reminiscent of a Victorian trompe-l’oeil mural.
Lee Kit’s laidback attitude to life is seen in his installation of a table and cloth and of bedding comprising large pillows using the artists’ own self-dyed cloth with printed text offering sage Buddhist-like advice to relax: “Pour yourself a hot bath, pour yourself a drink”; “Nothing’s wrong”.
Lee, however, delves into the art world’s use of text and using Laurence Weiner and Barbara Kruger as inspiration, the artist hovers on the cusp of the inexplicable playing with both language and word-form: “From revolution to revelation”, “A perfect ending for a perfect day” and “My favourite waste of time” offer a necessary bohemian twist to the exhibition and let the viewer really escape.
